The New England Patriots acquired wide receiver Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns on Monday in exchange for a conditional 2019 fifth-round draft pick, the Browns announced on Monday.
In addition, the Browns annojunced they signed Rod Streater.
The Browns had announced on Saturday that they would release Gordon, but decided to trade him instead after learning of interest from other NFL teams.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick has taken chances of players with off-field issues in the past. The addition of Gordon gives Tom Brady his most talented receiver since Randy Moss, who was also considered a high-risk player.
The Browns apparently had decided on Saturday to release Gordon after he showed up late for work that day and was "not himself,'' sources told Cleveland.com.
He also said he had a pulled hamstring, and that may have occurred during a video shoot on Friday to promote his clothing line, according to the Cleveland.com report, which added that the Browns had decided to part ways with Gordon because of his off-field issues, not because of the injury.
"This afternoon we informed Josh Gordon and his representatives that we are going to release him on Monday,'' Browns general manager John Dorsey said in a statement on Saturday. "For the past six years, the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally and wanted the best for him, but unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward. We wish Josh well."
Gordon played in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers and had one reception for 17 yards and a touchdown.
Gordon has missed a total of 54 games over the past four seasons due to multiple NFL suspensions. However, Gordon should be free to play for the Patriots as soon as he is healthy.
Gordon led the league with 1,646 receiving yards in 2013, even though he only played in 14 games. He has only made it through an entire 16-game season once, and that was in his rookie year of 2012.
Streater is in his sixth NFL season out of Temple. Originally signed by Oakland as an undrafted free agent in 2012, Streater has appeared in 52 games with the Raiders (36) and 49ers (16). He has recorded 127 receptions for 1,755 yards and 10 touchdowns. He spent the preseason with the Buffalo Bills.
