HARRISBURG, Penn. (CN) - Pennsylvania officials charged a Harrisburg-area man with attempted murder, terrorism and arson Monday after police said he admitted breaking into and lighting fires at the governor's residence early Sunday morning.
Police said a suspect, whom they later identified as Cody Balmer, 38, was captured on video scaling a fence to enter the property around 2 a.m. Sunday while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were home. No one was injured in the attack.
Officials said the attacker used a hammer to shatter a window on the residence's south side, threw a Molotov cocktail inside, then broke another window, crawled in and lit two more fires before escaping through a fire exit.
Police said Balmer turned himself in and said he committed the attack, which caused substantial damage, according to the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office. Balmer told state troopers Sunday that he would have beaten the governor with a hammer if they had an encounter.
Video of the incident shows the intruder wearing a "Snap-On" jacket with distinctive shoulder patches, which investigators later found at Balmer's house along with a container full of gasoline, according to police.
Shapiro, a Democrat, and his wife and children were on the opposite side of the building during the attack.
"Lori and I are overwhelmed by the prayers and the messages of support that we've received," Shapiro said at a news conference Sunday.
The attack occurred during the Jewish holiday of Passover, which Shapiro and his family celebrated Saturday evening.
"No one will deter me or my family or any Pennsylvanian from celebrating their faith openly or proudly," Shapiro said. He also noted that "we don't know the person's specific motives yet."
Shapiro emphasized that violence is not acceptable.
"And I don't give a damn if it's coming from one particular side or the other. Directed at one political party or another. Or one particular person or another. It is not OK," he said.
Balmer is in the hospital for an unrelated medical incident.
