Dublin is set to welcome American football fans from across the globe as the NFL comes to Croke Park this Sunday, September 28, 2025. The highly anticipated clash between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings is expected to draw a crowd of over 70,000 people to the iconic stadium.
Kick-off is scheduled for 2.30pm, with gates opening from 11.30am. However, festivities will begin much earlier across the city, with NFL-themed events planned throughout the day.
Traffic Disruption Expected Across Dublin
A large Garda operation will be in place to manage both security and traffic for the event, with significant congestion expected in Dublin city centre and the Dublin 3 area. Traffic volumes are likely to increase steadily in the hours before kick-off, with a sharp spike expected after the game ends. NFL games typically run for three to four hours.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and consider using public transport where possible. Full public transport information is available on DublinBus.ie, Luas.ie, IrishRail.ie, and BusEireann.ie, as well as on the Croke Park website.
A Garda cordon will be in effect on streets surrounding the stadium, with road closures beginning well before the game and continuing afterwards.
Fan Events and Tailgate Party
The excitement won't be limited to the stadium. Merrion Square will host a "Steelers Tailgate" fan zone from 10am, promising entertainment, food, and music for NFL fans of all stripes. A Fan March from Fairview Park to Croke Park is also planned just before kick-off, adding to the electric atmosphere.
Pedestrian traffic will be heavy throughout the day, particularly in areas around the fan events and along the march route. Localised rolling road closures are expected as a result.
Heightened Garda Presence
An Garda Síochána has confirmed a strong police presence across the city, with uniformed officers supported by specialist units including the Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, Air Support, and Armed Support Units. The Gardaí have worked closely with a range of stakeholders to ensure the safety and smooth running of the event.
Entry and Bag Policy
Attendees are reminded that a clear bag policy will be in effect. Only clear plastic or vinyl tote bags (no larger than 30cm x 15cm x 30cm), or clear freezer bags, will be permitted. A small clutch or purse is also allowed. All attendees will be subject to security checks as a condition of entry.
A bag drop facility will be available at Ballybough Community Centre for those who need it.
Respect for the Local Community
With Croke Park situated in a residential area, fans are asked to show consideration for local residents when arriving and departing. Noise levels, littering, and general behaviour will be closely monitored.
